Haiti Outreach Gathering This Weekend

February 11, 2010

This weekend is Valentine’s day, and while couples will no doubt be showering each other with amorous excess, there’s also an opportunity for Angelenos to show their love for the beleaguered citizens of Haiti. As I mentioned earlier, Angelenos have a unique sympathy for any city or country which suffers through an earthquake. Though we don’t have a Hatian community as large as some on the east coast, the Hatians of LA seem equally eager to help out their native land. One such native is Carine Fabius (pictured), who along with Dorsay Dujon at Living Art Los Angeles has founded Hatian Relief LA last month. Their mission is “to put the considerable talents of local musicians, artists and dancers to work in doing benefit concerts to raise money for badly needed supplies.” Working with other local organizations, such as Hollywood Unites for Haiti, they are organizing frequent concerts and events to help benefit the relief effort.

Their next big event will be this Sunday (Valentines Day) at Echo Park Lake, from 11 AM to 5 PM. It features Hatian art, ceramic art, a screening of the documentary The Road to Fondwa, and food from TiGeorge’s Chicken. Hope you can make it!
