Mandeville Madman Sentenced

January 11, 2010

Last Friday, the road-raging doctor of Mandeville Canyon was finally sentenced – only a month behind schedule. And the sentence? Five years of hard time for Dr. Christopher Thompson, at a federal pound-me-in-the-ass prison. After the sentence, Thompson issued a conciliatory and uncharacteristically level-headed statement. But then again, any statement made under similar circumstances usually is.

Wearing dark blue jail scrubs, Christopher Thompson wept after offering a tearful apology to the injured riders. He also urged a peaceful resolution to conflicts between cyclists and residents of the upscale residential street where the crash took place.

Oh Chris, you’re so wise! And all it took for you to realize this was brutally maiming two bike riders with your car. While I certainly endorse Chris’s ultimate stance on this, I really hope others can come to share this viewpoint without having to hospitalize cyclists beforehand.

In other news, our friends at Streetsblog have pointed us to a particularly disgusting corner of the interwebs: the anti-cycling facebook page. My guess is that the misguided rednecks individuals responsible for this site have yet to hear about the legal precedent set by the not so good doctor. Yet, facebook refuses to tear this group down; although their policy prohibits groups containing “content that is hateful, threatening… or that contains nudity or graphic or gratuitous violence”, there’s clearly nothing hateful, threatening, or gratuitously violent about the content of the group, which includes pictures such as the one at left. But hey, there might be some nudity in there, I can’t tell through all the dust and carnage and stuff. Maybe we can at least call them out on that.

Will the case of Dr. Thompson lead to a more respective and cooperative attitude between cars and bikes? Or will we continue with the moronic anti-bicycle as seen above? Time will tell.
