Kickass New Used Bookstore Downtown

December 23, 2009

I’m perennially sniffing around the Old Bank District in Downtown, whose development in recent years is generally deemed either “vibrant” or “evil”. But love it or hate it, OBD’s now got a great used bookstore. It’s The Last Bookstore in Los Angeles, a store whose title will hopefully prove to be ironic. The store is built on the former site of Old Bank DVD at Fourth and Main, which recently relocated to the other side of the building. And unlike other used bookstores, the books aren’t too used; I found two hardcovers of year-old books for $5 each, though you have to pay in cash. The best part: this place is a magnet for cute bookish girls with glasses.

As a side note, in searching for the as-yet nonexistent web presence of TLBILA (a tongue twister of an acronym), I stumbled upon the Downtown Book Blog, a venture of the nearby Metropolis Books. How cool is it that of all the cities on the planet with “downtown” areas, LA is the first one to get a book blog? Metropolis is a bit better established, and definitely worth a visit as well.
