LB Sharrows Now a Permanent Fixture?

April 22, 2009

sharrow1As I was pedaling down 1st street in Downtown Long Beach yesterday, I noticed what looked at first like a funny green thing near the right side of the road. As it turned out, that funny green thing was actually a brand new sharrow! Presumably it was just a remnant of the earlier Bike Festival. But the fact that the city has left it there is surely a good indication that bikes have a future in Long Beach. Or, at the very least, it’s a happy coincidence in which bureaucratic inertia has actually benefited the citizenry.

In other Long Beach-related news, mural artist Wyland has been commissioned to paint a giant mural of the earth on top of the Long Beach Arena. Wyalnd has already adorned the sides of the cylindrical arena with one of the largest murals in the world, and he hopes to finish this current earth painting in 24 hours. Good luck! No word yet as to how the general public will be able to see this rooftop mural without the aid of grappling hooks or a helicopter. Let’s just hope Google Maps updates their satellite view soon.
