Villaraigosa Wins

March 4, 2009

As of 1 AM this morning, with 99.94% of precincts reporting, Antonio Villaraigosa has received 55% of the vote and will be mayor of Los Angeles for the next four years, provided he doesn’t win the 2010 race for Governor of California. From the mayor’s acceptance speech:

I stand before you all humbled tonight, humbled by your support and by your confidence. I’m humbled by your continued trust and your continuing forgiveness.

Forgiveness? Why would you need our forgiveness? …. oohhhhhhh, right. Tony’s wife may not have forgiven him for his Clintonesque misdeeds, but at least the LA electorate isn’t going to file for divorce.

grool! In the city controller race, Wendy Greuel still holds 65% of the vote and appears to be the likely winner. An ABC7 video shows her enthusiastically high-fiving supporters. In the city attorney’s race, Jack Weiss leads Carmen “Nuch” Trutanich 36% to 27%, but will likely face a runoff election in May.

In the 5th district city council race, David T. Vahedi leads Paul Koretz by .2%. In other council races, Jan Perry and Richard Alarcón are poised to win with 100% of the vote.

Charter Amendment/Proposition B has fallen narrowly behind with 49.70% of voters in favor of the plan. Fortunately, the “disabled children survivor benefit” plan appears to have passed. Congratulations LA, you’ve saved the children!
